The transm issible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) a re caused by prions and affect animais and human s. The recent epidemie in the United Kingdom began in 1986 and has reached nearly 200,000 bovine animais, that were contaminated by protein supplement produced from the carcasses of contam inate d sheep and goat s. Probably humans acquired TSE by ingesting contaminated beef. Until January 2004, 148 cases had been reported as a variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease . The pre vent ion and control consist in global surve illance , government measures that regulate the importat ion of cattle products from affected areas and recommendations for managing individ ua is that are vCJD affected in the ho sp ita is or i nd ivid ua is wit h unclear d iagn oses. Prions have an unusual resistance to conventional decon tamination me tho ds. Those items which are contaminated by tissues that easily become infected should be decon taminated through chemical and/or physical agents : im mer sion in sodium hydroxide and autoclave at 1 21 º C for 60 minutes or 1 3 4ºC for 1 8 minute s. Hospital professionals should elaborate policies regarding to instruments decontamination based on the recommendations of t he governmental health care agen cie s.
